Grant Opportunity of the Month: No Kid Hungry Innovation Lab’s Umbrella Model Grant for Afterschool Meals

 Healthy meals served in a Brockton, Massachusetts classroom

No Kid Hungry is offering a grant to pilot an “umbrella model”, in which all students are offered an afterschool meal, regardless of whether they participate in an afterschool activity. Only middle and high schools are eligible to apply, and funding ranges from $1,500 to $2,000 per school. The pilot must last three weeks and the school must publicize the meals to the whole student body. The application deadline is September 18th.

A Summer Food Story from Massachusetts

An SFSP meal

SFSP programs delivered on the promise of a hunger-free summer for many Massachusetts families this year, including the subjects of this anecdote from one of our state's amazing sponsors.

"Two of the students who participated [in SFSP] come from a single parent household with five children ranging in age from Kindergarten to eighth grade. The mother is disabled and each day is a struggle for her to care for her family both physically and financially. The three weeks that the children were able to access a nutritious meal made a huge difference for her and her children."

Food Day 2015

WATCH: Lilia Smelkova on TedX, "Changing the Global Food System"

This year, undertake some food consciousness-raising in your community by hosting a Food Day event on October 24th. There are lots of ways to throw a grand celebration, whether you host an event every year or are just hearing about Food Day for the first time. For instance, have a farmer give a public talk one evening during the week. Serve local produce in the cafeteria during the school day. Show a food documentary after school with healthy, fresh snacks (here’s a list of some great food films). If you do host an event, CNOP would love to hear about it and to further publicize your work, so don’t forget to share!
