Parents, Take Action!

Parents know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. What they may not realize is that school breakfast is available to all students, regardless of income. This great resource not only benefits students' academic performance and classroom behavior, but it also saves parents time and money.

Action Step: Encourage your child to participate in the breakfast program at his/her school.

  • Complete a school meal application each year and return it to your child's school to determine whether your child is eligible for free or reduced-priced meals. Even if you do not think that you are eligible, is it still important to return the form to the school.
  • Talk to your child about the importance of school breakfast, and find out if there are any obstacles to participating in the program.
  • Attend breakfast at your child's school. Seeing breakfast in action will give you a better sense of what is served and how it is run.
  • Request that the PTO president include school breakfast as a topic on the next meeting's agenda and distribute outreach materials. Inform other parents about the benefits of the breakfast program.
  • Tell the principal, school nutrition director, nurse, and teachers at your child’s school about all of the ways that school breakfast benefits your family.
  • Volunteer to supervise the breakfast program at your child's school.
